Gum Disease Treated at Our California Dental Practice

At the Center for Advanced Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, we seek to provide therapies for patients who have gum disease. It’s very important to seek treatment for periodontal infection. Gum disease has been linked to a number of health issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Did you know that gum disease is the number one reason for adult tooth loss in the
United States? Gum disease has also been linked to a number of other health issues, including heart disease, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. When you don’t brush and floss, bacteria attaches to your enamel and creates the yellow build-up, or plaque, you see on your teeth. You know when your teeth feel “fuzzy”? That’s bacteria—and it’s eating away your enamel and can affect and eventually infect your gums if not treated regularly. At the Center for Advanced Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, we recommend the following oral hygiene recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day—in the morning and at bedtime.
  • Floss at least once a day, especially before bedtime so food debris does not remain on your teeth while you sleep and lead to dental decay and periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Use an oral rinse which kills bacteria.
  • Choose fluoridated products for brushing.
  • Ask Dr. Howard about dental sealants which are thin composite resin materials flowed into uncompromised premolars and molars to prevent future cavities.
  • Get recommendations from our dental team about the right products and techniques to use for your daily oral hygiene routine.

Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is an oral infection caused by bacterial growth in your mouth. This collection of plaque build-up attacks your gums, causing inflammation, tenderness, and redness. At the Center for Advanced Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, we preserve and treat gum tissues with the goal of achieving optimum dental health. Non-surgical periodontal therapy is a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums that removes bacterial plaque build-up, also known as tartar, from above and below the gum line. We use both traditional methods as well as our diode laser technology to perform this valuable service. Once the tartar is removed, your gums regain health, and that gives you a good foundation for your dental wellbeing.
