Preventive Dentistry in
San Marcos and Rancho Bernardo

At the Center for Advanced Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Nelson Y. Howard and our friendly team of dental professionals provide preventive dental healthcare. Among our services for preventive dentistry are:

  • interceptive decay (cavity) intervention.
  • sealants for children and adults.
  • complete oral hygiene education.
  • early detection of pathological conditions.
  • creating long-term and physical health by treating oral infections.
  • professional and deep cleanings to promote dental health and wellness.
  • all aspects of general dentistry care, to help our patients maintain the health of their mouth.

Common dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease won’t spontaneously resolve. Preventive dentistry ensures that your dental issues are caught in the earliest stages, which allows us to do more conservative, affordable treatments. Decay in your teeth and disease in your gums must receive dental intervention at either our San Marcos or Rancho Bernardo office. Left alone, these types of problems will worsen, causing additional damage to your gum and bone tissues.

Dr. Howard may recommend periodontal and laser-assisted therapy, which is a thorough and deep cleaning of build-up and hardened bacteria (tartar) from above and below your gum line. You may also need decay/cavity treatments such as tooth-colored fillings, composite or porcelain inlays/onlays, or crown restorations to resolve specific dental conditions present.

Routine cleanings are important because they help maintain the overall health of your mouth. Dr. Howard and his highly-trained team strongly encourage patients to attend regular dentistry examinations twice a year. During these checkups, our staff will take digital x-rays of your teeth, so we’ll have a better view of your dental problems if they arise. We know that if you can stay informed of your oral health needs, you’ll be able to maintain a more effective self-care routine.

Patient education in the many aspects of dental health is essential and is reviewed with all of our patients at every visit, so that you can properly care for your teeth during your lifetime. Our dental hygienist customizes your dental cleaning according to your needs at each visit. Our team will make recommendations which are designed to promote your overall periodontal and dental health. Along with Dr. Howard, our hygienist helps in detecting early dental-related problems. Together, their common goal is optimum dental health and longevity. We want you to keep your teeth for a lifetime!

Progressive Dentistry

The Center for Advanced Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry believes in progressive, modern dental techniques and products. Dr. Howard uses lasers for soft tissue, periodontal, canker sore, and cold sore treatments. Patients who make appointments at our San Marcos or
Rancho Bernardo dental practices can opt for reminders sent via text and email.

Technology keeps us on the cutting edge of dentistry. We use the Dexis digital x-ray system, digital photography, and intraoral cameras to ensure you receive a state-of-the-art diagnosis. We also use infection measures following the guidelines of several federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These protocols include:

  • We wear disposable masks and gloves.
  • We utilize single-use products for those items that cannot be sterilized.
  • We chemically disinfect all surfaces before new patients enter our treatment rooms (operatories).
  • We sanitize instruments with a high-frequency ultrasonic cleaner, followed by sterilization via high heat and pressurized steam. These items are then placed in sterile bags until it’s time for use.
  • We have our sterilizers tested weekly by outside services to insure they continue to meet our high standards for sterilization.
